Kelsi Sheren, CEO of Brass & Unity

Q: Kelsi, could you share a bit about your journey from serving as an artillery Gunner & CST in Afghanistan to becoming the CEO of Brass & Unity? What inspired you to start making jewelry out of spent bullet casings, and how did that lead to the creation of your successful brand?

KS: My journey in the CAF was a different one and unique because of the position I was in as a female gunner. I was fortunate to be able to serve in a CST role alongside other countries. I left the Canadian Armed Forces due to an injury, so because of this I had to find other ways to move my life forward. I was able to start building jewelry on the kitchen table using spent casings and turning them into wearable jewelry pieces. From this, I was able to transition out of the service and into a new career.

Q: Your newly published book, “Brass and Unity, One Woman’s Journey Through the Hell of Afghanistan and Back” is generating a lot of excitement. Can you give us a sneak peek into what readers can expect to discover within its pages? What message or lessons do you hope readers will take away from your story?

KS: This is a story of my journey through my life leading up to my deployment and afterwards through transitioning into civilian life. I was able to learn a lot through this process while writing and realize that everything in this life happens for you, and not to you. There are some really solid lessons in this book for anyone who is going through a hard time or looking for inspiration through the difficulties that the world throws at us. This book is not a military book, its one of growth, healing, and lessons.

Q: We’re eagerly looking forward to your speaking session on October 14th. Could you give us a glimpse of what you will be discussing during your talk? What key takeaways can attendees expect from your presentation?

KS: I will be discussing my life and the journey to get where I am now in 2023. The takeaways are stories of resiliency, a willingness to see that there are always lessons in situations that are difficult, if you choose to see them. The reasons we must take risks in this life and how you can pull yourself up from the hardest and worst traumas to become a healthy, thriving human.

Q: You’ll also be present MPC’s National Conference for a live book signing event on Sunday, October 15th in the WIMI Lounge. Can you tell us a bit about what attendees can anticipate during this session? Will there be any personal anecdotes or stories from the book that you might share with those in attendance?

KS: I will be telling stories and anecdotes about entrepreneurship, growth, and lessons through trauma. Life can throw hard situations at you but its how you choose to respond that matters.
